Lorsqu’il a été arrêté en compagnie de son épouse et de ses enfants, John Joël Joseph a expliqué aux autorités jamaïcaines qu’il risquerait d’être tué si on le remettait aux autorités haïtiennes. Afin de se sortir du pétrin, il a offert deux millions aux policiers mais ce fut sans succès.
Il est important de signaler que le ministre de la justice Bertho Dorcé a avoué au Wall Street Journal qu’il était mieux de livrer l’ancien sénateur aux autorités américaines car Haïti est un pays insécuritaire et pauvre.
